DIY Hand Sanitizer You Can Make at Home

These days, we are all thinking a lot about staying healthy. Mostly staying home, eating well, exercising, and cleaning! But, there are some days that we need to enter the "real world" - which now begins the moment we step out our front doors. We wear masks and gloves when we go out. We use disinfectant wipes. We wash our hands constantly! That can be challenging at times when we are not close to a sink.

Hand sanitizer to the rescue! But, with many stores being out of daily essentials, including hand sanitizer, we need to find alternatives to help us stay virus-free. Luckily, using ingredients you may already keep at home, we can make our own hand sanitizer!

Beehive DIY Homemade Hand Sanitizer IngredientsAlcohol-based Hand Rub with 91% Rubbing Alcohol

(74% alcohol content)

Ingredients

  • 6.5 fl oz 91% isopropyl alcohol
  • 3 tbsp (1.5 fl oz) thick aloe (Aloe vera) gel
  • 20-40 total drops essential oil(s) of choice (optional) – lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), peppermint (Mentha x piperita), tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) are good to try out.

  • Directions: Combine thick aloe gel and essential oils (if using) in a glass pint jar; cover and shake well. Add isopropyl alcohol and cover and shake well
Label and store out of reach of small children.

For Use: Store into smaller containers, ie. labeled small glass dropper bottles. Before pouring into your container, shake well. Before each use, shake well to make sure ingredients are mixed. Squirt onto hands, rubbing in thoroughly so the sanitizer covers all areas of the hand.

Of course, nothing takes the place of soap and hot water for 20 or more seconds. While you are on-the-go, it may be more difficult to find a sink. Make sure to keep the small bottle of hand sanitizer in your purse or even a pocket, and use while at public places.
